Currently, there are two main types of popular washi paper: "Gampi," which has a glossy texture, and "Kozo," which is made up of long, flexible fibers. The "Hokusai" we're introducing today is one of Awagami Studio's products, with a very soft texture that beautifully expresses depth through gradation rather than sharpness.
I actually struggled to tame this washi paper. I tried and failed to create a stable print while taking advantage of its soft surface composition. It was British printmaker Barrie Watts who gave me the hint that led to the solution. I'm deeply grateful for his advice.
